Kew offers commemorative currency

The Royal Botanic Gardens Kew is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year.

Among the events and promotions to mark the milestone, the venue has decided to release a commemorative 50p coin.

The currency will enter circulation later this year, but garden and greenhouse lovers can purchase a special gold, silver or cupro-nickel collectors edition from Kews gift shop or the Royal Mint.

It was designed by renowned artists Christopher le Brun, who explained he chose the sites instantly recognisable Chinese pagoda as an iconic image for the piece.

The structure was completed in 1762 as a surprise for the mother of King George III, Princess Augusta.

"I had the idea early on that plants should twine around and grow up through the tower, which I felt helped create a circling movement full of vitality," le Brun explained.

He added the design shows how man and nature are interdependent.

Meanwhile, the Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show is set to take place from Tuesday (May 19th), with a focus on budget gardening.
