Huddersfield park gets restored conservatory

Work has begun on the dilapidated conservatory and greenhouses in Huddersfields Greenhead Park.

The disused glasshouses have been demolished and the conservatory surrounded by boarding in preparation for its refurbishment.

A new toilet block and landscaping will also be added as part of the £5.4 million regeneration project.

The restoration should be completed by 2010, by which time the Grade Two listed conservatory will have been returned to its former glory.

"After many years of waiting, the demolition of these glasshouses signals the start of this exciting restoration project," said cabinet member for leisure and neighbourhood services councillor Elizabeth Smaje.

"2009 promises to be a very exciting time in Greenhead Park and I hope that the thousands of visitors to the Park will help to make this project a great success."

When re-opened, the conservatory will host exhibitions and small events in conjunction with the sites new restaurant.
