How to turn $100 into $1,000

Garden and greenhouse enthusiasts have been told that they can use their green space to their advantage by starting a vegetable plot.

Philly.com reported that the Department of Agriculture has said that growers can harvest $1,000 worth of food from an investment of just $100.

It is therefore no surprise that seed sales at Burpee & Co have increased by 15 per cent since the beginning of the year in line with the rise in the number of Americans growing their own food.

Pennsylvania Horticultural Society senior education programme manager Chela Kleiber explained that you do not need a lot of space to harvest some tasty fruit or vegetables.

"People get a lot of satisfaction from picking their own herbs and vegetables, even if theyre just planted in a few pots on the front steps," she told the website.

Longwood Gardens display designer Jim Sutton added that the site has noticed an increased interest in home vegetable production, adding that many people are seeking to grow heirloom varieties.
