Hosepipe bans to be brought in during spring

Water companies are ready to bring hosepipe bans in during spring if necessary, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). It was announced a few days ago that most of southern and eastern England is officially in drought.

The Environment Agency will now take steps to monitor the impact that the dry weather has on wildlife and fisheries.

Environment Secretary, Caroline Spelman, said: “Drought is already an issue this year with the South East, Anglia and other parts of the UK now officially in drought, and more areas are likely to be affected as we continue to experience a prolonged period of very low rainfall.

“It is not just the responsibility of government, water companies and businesses to act against drought.

“We are asking for the help of everyone by urging them to use less water and to start now.”

The Royal Horticultural Society has already started advised gardeners on how to cope with drought during the spring and summer.
