Go green in the garden, NS&I urges

As the nation prepares itself for Recycle Week, financial services provider NS&I reminds horticulturalists that there are savings to be made from ecologically-aware gardening.

John Prout sales and retention director at the firm, states: "Growing your own vegetables is a great way to save money and the environment and Recycle Week presents the perfect opportunity to combine it with another great money-saving activity."

Tips from the company include using old containers such as milk cartons and soft drinks bottles as pots for seeds to grow in, improvising plant markers out of old plastic knives and creating ties for flora out of plastic carrier bags.

Concluding, it is suggested that compost can be created from household and garden waste, rather than purchasing it from a garden centre.

Recycle Week 2008 runs from June 2nd and is organised by the Waste and Resources Action Programme in partnership with a range of recycling organisations.
