Glass act for Accrington building

A historic Accrington building could be in line for a new £13 million makeover, with initial plans being unveiled recently.

The former Accrington Conservative Club building in Cannon Street could be set to get a facelift, with a rooftop café, glass atrium and gym on the cards, according to plans published in the Lancashire Telegraph.

As part of the plans, the building would receive an entirely new glass atrium at the rear, leading onto Paradise Street, as damage to the existing building has made a renovation necessary.

Nelson Architect John Clancy explained a combination of factors had lead to the demise of the original structure and that the new plans would address the issues.

"Vandals, rats and rain have destroyed the plaster work of the ballroom so it is impossible to renovate," he explained in the Lancashire Telegraph.

Planning permission will be sought after Hyndburn Council decide whether to award the building listed status.

Glass structures are very much the order of the day in building design, with numerous designers of modern buildings heavily incorporating the material into their design.
