Gardening Against the Odds 2013
The Gardening Against the Odds annual ceremony took place last week, with Sajeda Kadir, originally from Bangladesh scooping the top prize. The ceremony celebrates those who battle physical or environmental odds in order to have a positive effect on communities.
Sajeda, created an edible garden in a disused adventure playground in Camden, north London and motivated other women to join her enterprise. She said “Sharing makes you happy.”
Alan Titchmarsh hosted the awards, with prizes presented by the Duchess of Northumberland, botanist David Bellamy and actress Susan Hampshire.
Titchmarsh described gardening as the;
“… profession that will outlast all the others. The profession that gives more solace, more spiritual uplift than anything else.”
He continued, asking for gardeners to be;
“…evangelical about what we do. To open everyone’s eyes – including the Government’s – to the importance of the great outdoors. To give everyone access to it, whether it be a park, a botanic garden, the allotment.”
