Community garden springs up in Washington state

A Washington couple has successfully campaigned for a $5,000 grant to help start a community garden in their local area.

Ben and Dee Andrews, from Bellingham, close to the Canadian border, won the grant from the Mary Redman Foundation and the money will go towards providing 50 raised beds for the garden, according to the Bellingham Herald.

The Guide Meridian/Cordata Neighbourhood Association will run the garden and around half of the four feet by 16 feet beds have been taken already.

Recent focus on the environment combined with the financial fiasco has helped spark a renewed interest in growing your own – something that excites project leader Becky Curtis.

"This movement … I want to call it back to the land … is sweeping the country, and I get to participate in it here in Bellingham," she told the newspaper.

Meanwhile, another community garden is set to be established in Chicago at the Centre for Urban Agriculture, according to the Chicago Flame.
