Community allotment wins Beautiful Scotland award

The allotments, established by the village’s Community Futures group a year ago, were honoured with the Zero Waste Scotland prize, which recognised the redevelopment of a previously disused council yard and the organisation’s innovative recycling programme.

Local resident Bob Summerhill, who chairs the Plains Community Futures group, told the Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser that the judges had been impressed with the amount of local children that were involved in the project.

“All the materials we’ve used have been recycled or we’ve made use of things which were no longer needed and were given to us, which was why we earned the Zero Waste award,” he added.
