A Garden Should Be Compulsory – Monty Don
Celebrity gardener Monty Don, has urged authorities to make it compulsory to either have a garden, or have a stake in untended land by elderly or people with disabilities.
Speaking at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, Don argued that all houses should come with a garden, and all flats should come with an allotment, in order for the next generation to learn about plants and flowers.
Additionally, he believes that a sharing scheme, where people who cannot manage their garden, “or are simply happy to share it”, could work with those who do not have access to one.
He says that primary school gardening schemes, whilst admirable, do not do enough for young people interested in gardening once they reach high school age;
“We have a huge dropout rate at about the age of 10, and then they come back to it about the age of 30.”
