A Garden Across The Thames

The design genius who brought us the Olympic cauldron has unveiled plans for a £60million floating garden that will bridge the River Thames.

Thomas Heatherwick has been commission by Mayor Boris Johnson to create “an iconic piece of green infrastructure” similar to New York’s iconic High Line – an aerial park planted on a former railway track.

The new bridge will be the first new crossing since the Millennium Bridge opened in 2002. It is part of an overarching scheme to make the Thames more pedestrian friendly.

The Garden Bridge idea has been championed by Joanna Lumley for a long time. She is understandably very happy that the idea has been given the green light;

“It will be the slowest way to cross the river, as people will dawdle and take in the great cityscapes all around. It will be sensational in every way.”

Planning permission is currently in the offing, with the earliest opening date pencilled in for 2016.
