Why bother growing your own vegetables

Growing your own fruit and vegetables will provide you with a wide number of benefits. As well as allowing you to cut down on how much you normally spend on fruit and vegetables at the supermarket, growing your own food also provide you with a number of health benefits.

Growing your own fruit and vegetables takes time and effort, and although many people opt for the supermarket variety for more convenience, producing your own food will prove to be far more beneficial in the long run.
By taking the time to grow your own fruit and vegetables, you can produce nutritious food that will keep you and your family healthy.

Tomatoes, onions, melons, cucumbers, radishes and lettuces are just a few of the many fruit and vegetables that can be grown in your own garden. In addition to these, you can also consider growing herbs, which not only liven up your cooking but are also known to provide a number of medicinal benefits.

When growing your own fruit and vegetables, it is vital that you consider growing them organically.
Many supermarket varieties have been grown in fields where chemical-laden fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides have been used, making them far less healthy than the fresh and organic home-grown types.

Another thing to consider is how much you would spend on supermarket fruit and vegetables compared to how much it would cost to grow your own. You can cut down on costs by using your own organic methods of growing, such as composting household and garden waste.
By growing your own vegetables, you can create healthy meals such as salads, soups and many other dishes that will provide you and your family with plenty of nutrients. Your home-grown food will be completely chemical free, creating a much healthier atmosphere and environment within your garden.

If you have a greenhouse, then you can grow your own fruit and vegetables all year round. Just add extra lighting or heating when needed and make sure your greenhouse is well ventilated during the warmer months.
A greenhouse will keep your vegetables protected from the cold and frost during winter and will also provide an environment that is suitable for other interesting plants, such as tropical plants.
If you have limited space, then consider growing your vegetables indoors or in a set of cold frames, which are suitable for smaller gardens.
