Greenhouse Positioning
Being natural Western Red Cedar a Gabriel Ash greenhouse is an attractive addition to any garden environment. However there are are number of considerations to take on board when choosing a suitable site for your greenhouse.
The Lay of the Land.
If you have the luxury of of large garden then the ridge of the greenhouse should run east to west - leaving the length of the greenhouse facing the southward sun. Making maximum use of the sun with a south facing aspect will ensure that greenhouse stays warmer than those who do not share this advantage. If you chose to put blinds in your greenhouse at a later stage, which is very simple with a wooden greenhouse, then you need them only for one side. If you are considering a vinehouse or Lean-to greenhouse then a south facing wall is ideal.
Down to Earth.
The base onto which our greenhouses are to be laid should be level and square. We recommend sitting our greenhouses on a concrete plinth with a single course of brick on top. This lifts the greenhouse up away from any splash adding to the longevity of the greenhouse. Combating a sloping site with a course of brick or two may present you with a greater choice for the positioning of your greenhouse. In all instances we would send you a plan for the preparation of the base of the greenhouse that recommends a simple concrete footing with a single coarse of brick on top. See some examples of greenhouse bases.
Convenience foods.
By positioning your greenhouse within easy reach of the house you will find that you use it more often. Proximity is often a consideration for the kitchen gardener where quick and easy access to the greenhouse ensures fresh produce is close to hand at all times. Such a position often makes it easier to provide services to the greenhouse such as watering and heating facilities.
