The Harlow Carr with Coldframes
Looking out of this large greenhouse into the surrounding woodland it is difficult to imagine a better setting. On a warm day the double hinged doors can be left open to assist in ventilating the greenhouse. Like many structures of this size the greenhouse has been assembled onto a dwarf wall.
Many Victorian greenhouses were also positioned onto dwarf walls. Sometimes the walls had troughs to the outside that were used to store manure. This not only provided a convenient source of minerals to the plants but would also generate heat that could be used to warm the greenhouse. Such greenhouses are hard to come across these days but with the price of fuels rising so sharply perhaps we will see a move back towards these time proven methods. You heard it here first.
To the side of this greenhouse we do not see a trough full of manure but a side of cold frames which will be used to harden off the plants from the greenhouse in there journey to the garden.
