Gabriel Ash at Chelsea 2008

Another year at Gabriel Ash, another Chelsea Flower Show has passed, and what a year it has been. Our bench joiners have been busier than ever before making literally hundreds of cold frames and greenhouses. The popularity of our attractive greenhouses along with all our cold frames is proof that the gardening sector continues to bloom.

The classic greenhouse range continues to grow in popularity and this year we exhibited on our stand the venerable Six House which at six foot by eight foot fits in most gardens and features in many wish lists. Expandable on a modular basis the classic greenhouse can be increased in size in both width and length in modules of two foot. But it has been the RHS Collection that has blossomed in recent months.

The entire Collection has expanded to include Lean-tos and Vinehouses. Free standing models can be ordered with integral coldframes, brick walls can be built to replace the cedar panelling – examples of both can be seen on the stand. Such planthouses would have been found in many Kitchen Gardens at the turn of the century. Were it not for the precision joinery you could be forgiven for mistaking such planthouses for their worthy predecessors.

We always like to demonstrate the flexibility of our bespoke joinery at the shows and this year at Chelsea we made no exception. We proudly presented a recent addition to the RHS Collection - The ‘Portico’. This stylish greenhouse, as the name might suggest, has a central porch allowing access to the greenhouse from the side. Maintaining all the classic features of the collection, narrow pane centres, steep roof pitch, cedar hand turned finials the ‘Portico’ will work comfortably in many a fine English Garden but may be better placed at the heart of the garden on the Country Estate.

The work involved in creating a stand for the World's most famous Flower Show is immense and receiving a Certificate of Commendation for the display is no mean feat. So it's a big thank you to all involved in the creation of the display. The planting by Richard Parker of Second Nature, the flagstone bases and walling by Phil Ramsker of PJR Contruction and the people behind the scenes in the offices and joinery who make it all possible.
