Growing onions from seeds can save money
Greenhouse enthusiasts might be looking to grow their onions from seedlings in future after it was claimed that they grow just as well as sets and cost far less money.
According to editor of the BBC Gardeners' World Magazine Adam Pascoe, despite onion sets being more convenient in terms of the greenhouse space they take up, the seedlings are the more financially viable option.
Mr Pascoe, writing in his blog, claimed that onions grown from seedlings can become surprisingly large and are around ten-times cheaper than buying sets. He also suggested that seedlings can be planted in modular trays in the greenhouse from February or March.
"If you're planning to grow your own onions during 2012, then growing from seed will certainly save you money compared to buying sets, seedlings and young plants," he continued.
Last week, award-winning landscape gardener Bunny Guiness suggested that vegetables such as cucumbers, aubergines and melons should be brought inside for the winter and replaced with more seasonal greenery.
