Planthouses Greenhouse enthusiasts keen on staying active on their patch this winter have been advised to opt for colour during the cold months.

According to editor of stopwatchgardener.com Sheila Averbuch, advised people to try and grow flowers near the door or the window because it helps brighten moods in the dreary winter conditions when people are entering and leaving a house.

Ms Averbuch also said people should be looking to have their garden in some kind of shape, for instance evergreens that may have become fluffy and overgrown should be trimmed for aesthetic reasons.

She added: "Even having one of those [plant pots] on either side of your front door makes you think 'oh I've got a proper house and isn't this lovely?"

Earlier this year, Gardeners World's Pippa Greenwood wrote in her blog that autumn is the ideal time to plant deciduous trees and shrubs as the moisture in the soil promotes good root development.ADNFCR-1495-ID-800786785-ADNFCR
