Cold Frames Collection Greenhouse enthusiasts could find it easier to get into a community garden scheme after the government issued a new booklet, which gives out tips on how to identify suitable sites and find funding, among other pieces of advice.

The guide aims to answer questions about planning permission and possible grants to get a community garden off the ground, as well as how people can use new powers to take control of land under the new Localism Bill.

It also recommends uses for different types of wildlife and their habitats, along with educational resources for local schools and training volunteers in horticulture.

"Community orchards are a brilliant way for communities to get together and grow their own. This guide is about giving a major boost to a quiet revolution in promoting and preserving the nation's orchards," communities and local government secretary Eric Pickles said.

Last month, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh announced it would be opening its doors to the community as part of the Edible Gardening Project.ADNFCR-1495-ID-800784079-ADNFCR
