Classic Greenhouses Greenhouse enthusiasts could be advised to start protecting their fruit and vegetable plants from the impending cold front as winter draws closer, according to an expert.

Pippa Greenwood, writing in her Gardeners' World blog, said some plants will remain unaffected but it's best to start planning for the frost as soon as possible so as to protect them.

Ms Greenwood added it could be time to move certain flowers into greenhouses to save leaves from becoming slightly downturned - a normal response to cold weather.

"Veg plants benefit from the extra warmth provided by fleece and cloches," she continued.

Writing in the Ecologist in August, Ms Greenwood stated that grouping plant pots closer together can help to keep them warm and protect them from the cold.

As well as protecting plants, this time of year could be ideal for planting deciduous trees and shrubs, as the warm soil and moisture promotes good root development, according to the BBC presenter.ADNFCR-1495-ID-800764374-ADNFCR
