Glasshouses The community in Bellsmyre, Dunbartonshire, may soon be able to take advantage of greenhouses in their public gardens as a horticultural project in the area has been given the go ahead by councillors.

Bellsmyre Community Garden Association came up with the idea of cultivating local produce then selling it to retailers and the tree and fruit planting has begun, as well as work on new permanent beds.

Schools, a nursery and a drug rehabilitation programme have all asked to be involved in the programme, according to secretary of the gardening association Martin Love.

He told the Lennox Herald: "There will be greenhouses, polytunnels, and seating for people to enjoy this new space. We hope to be able to create jobs out of the project. It's going to be great for Bellsmyre."

Last month a community garden in North Lanarkshire was handed the Zero Waste Scotland prize at the Beautiful Scotland awards after they redeveloped a disused council yard into a community horticultural hub.ADNFCR-1495-ID-800757359-ADNFCR
