School children discover love of gardening
Those thinking of investing in greenhouses might be interested to learn three primary schools in Hull have been named as flagships for a national initiative to put gardening firmly back on the map.
Children are discovering the joys of gardening at school as many of them don't have access to a patch at home and the Open Futures programme focuses on areas which are affected by high unemployment.
Headteacher of Chiltern Primary School Lynne Clark told the Yorkshire Post, gardening links "beautifully" to the curriculum and has helped give pupils a sense of purpose.
"We know since we started a more hands on approach, these children are saying they want to be at school," she added.
Director of the Open Futures Trust Lucy O'Rorke said the idea was to keep children interested in going to school while at the same time ensuring they gain a quality education.
The Open Futures Trust is a charity that aims to bring life skills to young children, so they are able to make it all the way through the education system.
