National Allotments Week set for UK
Greenhouse owners have been urged to celebrate the tradition of the Great British allotment from August 8th.
The National Allotments Week initiative is the brainchild of the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners (NSALG), which is keen for more spaces to be made available for those who are not fortunate enough to have a garden at home.
A number of events will take place around the country such as a session on how to keep chickens and compost making held by the Aylestone Lane Allotment Association in Leicestershire.
As well as being a week-long celebration of one of the UK's favourite pastimes, organisers want those who are stuck on allotment waiting lists to put pressure on their local councils to create more gardening areas.
Recent studies undertaken by the NSALG and Transition Town West Kirby have shown that there is a real dearth of available allotments across the country.
Having surveyed 323 local authorities in England, the researchers found there is a waiting list of 57 people for every 100 plots.
