Classic Greenhouses Greenhouse and gardening enthusiasts of the future are finding out about the joys of growing their own fruit and vegetables at a two-acre site in Northamptonshire.

Kelmarsh Hall's 18th century walled garden is full of produce chosen and planted to give a constant supply of seasonal crops, with potatoes, broad beans, peas, blackcurrants and cauliflowers all being harvested at the moment.

Now - with help from the Big Lottery Local Food Programme - organisers are using it to show the next generation of horticulturalists how they can grow their own, the Northampton Chronicle reports.

Youngsters learn about the different parts of the plants that get eaten and they have a tasting session to make things as understandable as possible.

Head gardener Esther McMillan said many of the children already have some knowledge of growing food, but most of that comes from their grandparents.

As well as the events for schoolchildren, the gardens are also used for regular cookery demonstrations in which anyone can go along to find out more about cooking seasonal produce.ADNFCR-1495-ID-800625127-ADNFCR
