Glasshouses A greenhouse and gardening enthusiast in Somerset got quite a shock when he found his latest batch of potatoes growing in an unusual way.

Henry Brown, of Hinton St George, discovered that some of his potatoes were growing on the stem of the plant, like a tree bearing fruit such as tomatoes, instead of underground, the Western Gazette - South Somerset reports.

The 72-year-old said he had never seen anything like it, while the "weird" spud had also baffled his neighbours.

"I did not see it at all until I came to dig it out of the ground," he said. "The potatoes and tomatoes are part of the same family, but they don't grown in the same way. I think my plant isn't sure whether it’s a potato or a tomato."

He went on to describe the potatoes in question as small and brown, suggesting they may not suitable candidates for the dinner plate.ADNFCR-1495-ID-800616741-ADNFCR
