Glasshouses Children at a Lancashire school are using their greenhouse and vegetable beds to cultivate produce good enough for use in an award-winning local restaurant.

Every pupil at Asheligh Primary School in Darwen is involved in a gardening class at least once each week, in which they help to grow all sorts of herbs and vegetables, the Lancashire Telegraph reports.

They are then used only metres away at MJ's Restaurant at the Whitehall Hotel, where head chef James Berry incorporates them into his dishes.

Last week, Mr Berry made herby bread with a group of pupils from the school containing their marjoram, hyssop, Welsh onions and chives.

Other produce used by the restaurant includes English mint lettuce, red onions, dill cabbage, sorrel, oregano and Greek sage.

Whitehall Hotel owner Neil Bullows said: "Everyone's a winner with this. It costs us a lot less, there's no carbon footprint and it's very educational for the children. The quality of the food they produce far exceeds what you could get from a supplier."ADNFCR-1495-ID-800615307-ADNFCR
