Classic Greenhouses Recycling water from the kitchen is a great way to keep plants well fed in times of drought, according to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).

Normal amounts of household detergent mixed in with water will not harm plants or the soil, the organisation stated, making it safe to use old washing up water to revive dehydrated plants.

The RHS was providing advice after the the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Environment Agency announced that parts of the UK are now in a state of drought.

As well as waste water from doing the washing up, it continued, any used to rinse vegetables can be collected and used around the garden.

"If you can save the water or wash your vegetables in a container and bring the water out and pour it close to the bottom of the plant then that will help," the charity explained.ADNFCR-1495-ID-800580416-ADNFCR
