Diarmuid Gavins Chelsea garden "a gimmick"
Former Gardeners' World presenter Diarmuid Gavin has been criticised over his decision not to let members of the public into his Chelsea Flower Show exhibit.
His 'flying' garden, based on the Oscar-winning movie Avatar, will feature a bright pink flying pod suspended 82ft in the air from a crane.
Tim Rumball, editor of Amateur Gardening magazine, branded the garden a "gimmick" because health and safety rules prevent show visitors from enjoying the view from the pod, even though a number of celebrities will get the chance to do so.
Truly great designs should be accessible to everyone, he added.
"Diarmuid Gavin's garden is a gimmick and has nothing to do with gardening in any real sense," he said. "This is just about getting publicity from the TV cameras. Even if he were to take a few people up, why should 200 people out of 157,000 paying visitors get the chance to see it?"
