Shed Collection Gardeners looking to take advantage of the sunny weather expected in the coming weeks should spend time creating a herb garden, an expert has suggested.

Using a container made from plastic, terracotta or wood, growing herbs can be very straightforward while helping to set them up can be great fun for kids, Richmond Council's head of parks operations Reg Leach explained in the Richmond and Twickenham Times.

Once washed gravel has been placed in the bottom of the container - Mr Leach prefers terracotta or wood - with loam-based soil on top, plants such as coriander, parsley, chives and sage will thrive.

"Put a layer of horticultural grit over the top of the soil to prevent slugs and snails getting to your herbs," he added.

As well as being the perfect time to set up a herb garden, May is also the right moment to start mowing and edging the lawn on a regular basis to ensure a really good finish when summer comes around, horticulturalists at the Eden Project told the Daily Telegraph recently.ADNFCR-1495-ID-800535204-ADNFCR
