RHS Greenhouse A group of schoolchildren in Burnham-on-Sea are celebrating after winning first prize in a national gardening competition.

The Berrow Primary School pupils grew their own vegetables over a nine-month period, keeping a diary of their achievements as they went along, Burnham-on-Sea.com reports.

After growing a wide variety of foods including peas, parsnips, cress and carrots, the group beat off the competition of ten other schools to win the £500 jackpot.

Head teacher Heather Hector said everybody was thrilled to have won.

"All of the children thoroughly enjoyed getting their hands dirty and learning how to grow their own vegetables, which has encouraged them to become more aware of their diet as well as where vegetables come from," she added.

Earlier this month, schoolchildren in Yorkshire were given a horticultural masterclass by gardening advisor John Hickling of the Royal Horticultural Society in a bid to get them interested in working outdoors, according to the Scarborough Evening News.ADNFCR-1495-ID-800405703-ADNFCR
