RHS Greenhouse Now is the time for greenhouse and gardening enthusiasts to start planting tomatoes, in the opinion of one expert.

Writing for the Daily Mail, former BBC Gardeners' World presenter Nigel Colborn said February is the right month to get things started.

Mr Colborn went on to say that planting in late winter is particularly important for greenhouse crops to be ready by summer.

Flavour is king for home-grown produce, he continued, as opposed to the supermarkets that select based on appearance and shelf-life.

The variety of uses tomatoes have, from salads to pasta sauces, mean it is good to grow a wide selection, the expert added.

For best results, he concluded, gardeners should use a greenhouse to grow the versatile product, saying: "In Britain, tomatoes do best under glass."

Donna McDaid, national secretary for the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners, recently claimed growing vegetables can help individuals improve their diet.ADNFCR-1495-ID-800391786-ADNFCR
