Bespoke Greenhouses Autumn is here and now is the perfect time to get apple trees into the ground, it has been suggested.

According to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), October can be a great time for some last minute planting before the winter frosts arrive.

It spoke to Pennard Plants owner Chris Smith, who is an expert in growing heritage apple trees, about how to go about selecting a variety that is right for you.

"My own favourite apple is Ergemont Russet," he told RHS Online, adding that the tree produces fruit that can be harvested in late September and is fairly vigorous in its growth.

Mr Smith added that the disease tolerant nature of the tree makes it ideal for organic growers and that it survives well in exposed gardens.

Another top choice is the Court Pendu Plat, which can be traced back to the 17th century and was popular in Victorian times due to its ability to bear an abundance of "lovely crisp fruit".

In other news, the RHS recently put tickets on sale for its 2011 events, including the famous Chelsea Flower Show.ADNFCR-1495-ID-800106543-ADNFCR
