First ever female president for RHS
Britains largest garden and greenhouse organisation has made history in electing its new president.
Elizabeth Banks is not only the first female to take up the role in the Royal Horticultural Societys (RHS) 206-year history, she is also the first president with a professional background in gardening.
Five RHS Chelsea Flower Show gold medals and 25 years of experience in the field of botany around the world mean Ms Banks will bring a wealth of knowledge to the position.
Her husband Lawrence is also affiliated with the RHS as a vice-president, meaning her work will also be something of a family affair.
The decision to elect the expert was taken at the recent RHS annual general meeting in Garden Harlow Carr, which recently opened its new £3.3 million education centre.
Other appointments made at the meeting include that of Sir Nicholas Bacon, who will take over as treasurer of the society.
Soil scientist Peter Gregory, Chelsea Physic Garden curator Rosie Atkins and former solicitor David Haselgrove will also bring their expertise to the organisation as the latest members of council.
Meanwhile, RHS members may have noticed some changes to its website, which now benefits from a new colour scheme and logo.
