How gardening helps the emotions
New research has shown that a quarter of Brits are not spending enough time in natural outdoor areas.
The study was carried out by leading psychologist Geoff Beattie and Ronseal, with the Manchester University professor claiming that gardening can be a great way to look after your mental health.
He noted that time spent in the garden, greenhouse, park or other green area helps to boost positive emotional responses.
Horticulture is a great way to ward off stress and improve your outlook on life, Professor Beattie explained.
"Gardening itself is a good physical activity," the expert noted.
"In addition, it has got the desired characteristic of taking you out of yourself, caring and nurturing and thinking about something else and again, you are tending to spend prolonged periods of time in a natural environment."
In other news, the Royal Horticultural Society is hosting its annual Chelsea Flower Show in London this week.
