RHS Greenhouse Plant Heritage has named a well-known TV star as its president, following the sad death of Robin Compton in 2009, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has revealed.

Mr Compton served the conservation charity for two decades prior to his passing and will now be succeeded by gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh.

The media personality was full of praise for the work carried out by Plant Heritage, noting that it aims to help both todays gardeners and those who will pick up their trowels in years to come.

He will now use his celebrity status to raise the charitys profile further and help it protect the countrys plant life.

"Alan has an extraordinary ability to reach out to people from all walks of life and share with them his passion for plants and gardens," explained Plant Heritage chairman Professor Michael Alder.

Titchmarsh is also a vice-president of the RHS and has presented a number of TV horticulture shows.

In other news, the RHS Garden Wisley recently won a major tourism award.ADNFCR-1495-ID-19751635-ADNFCR
