Big freeze garden advice
With the Met Office warning of more snow on the way, the big freeze looks set to continue to concern garden and greenhouse fans.
The weather forecasting organisation predicted more heavy snow for Yorkshire and Humber today (January 11th) and Wales tomorrow.
With so much now already having fallen and colder than usual temperatures being sustained for long periods, the Royal Horticultural Society has been inundated with calls from worried growers.
It has responded by issuing a list of hints and tips on its website which should help those who follow the advice to protect their plants to an extent.
The suggestions include moving any potted plants into a greenhouse or next to a wall for shelter and knocking the snow off evergreen and conifer branches.
RHS advisor Jenny Bowden explained that taking steps against the snow can be the difference between saving a plant and having to buy a new one.
"By taking sensible precautions gardeners can protect their plants and produce from the worst of the winter weather," she said.
