Garden and greenhouse fans could get growing tips from new book

A new guide to some of the worlds most beautiful bulbs has been launched and could be ideal for filling the Christmas stockings of garden and greenhouse fans around the country.

Anna Pavord - author of The Tulip - has written a reference book to some of her favourite varieties, helpfully listed in alphabetical order from Acis to Zigadenus, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) revealed.

The organisation is giving away three of the books to garden and greenhouse enthusiasts who answer a simple question based on an excerpt from the publication on the RHS website.

Those who are not lucky enough to win a copy can buy one from the RHS online bookshop.

Published by Mitchell Beazley, the books are available for £27 and offer a "fascinating introduction explaining why bulbs are different from other kinds of plant", according to the gardening body.

Meanwhile, Floors Castle in the Scottish Borders has installed a biomass boiler as it seeks to improve its sustainability, the RHS revealed.
