Planthouses The UKs Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has welcomed the news the government intends to conduct research into sustainable food growing.

According to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the UK is to look into its supplies by launching a study.

In a recent announcement by environment minister Hilary Benn, the government revealed it wants to ensure an affordable source of food is established for the future.

Sustainable techniques will play a major role in the study with both UK and global supplies studied, Mr Benn revealed.

"In the past few years, campaigns by the RHS and other organisations have sparked a huge increase in the number of people growing their own fruit and veg," stated the bodys director general Inga Grimsey.

Garden and greenhouse enthusiasts are able to help the UK environment by filling their own plots with food, she added.

In other news, the RHS recently stated scientists at its Garden Wisley attraction discovered a new plant disease never seen before in the UK.ADNFCR-1495-ID-19315141-ADNFCR
