Teach kids to garden, schools urged
Both parents and teachers should be encouraging youngsters to get out into the garden or greenhouse and learn about horticulture, according to one expert.
Doing so will help develop their skills and lead to a more sustainable society in future, explained to Garden Organic knowledge development officer Phillip Turvill.
He said growing can be a good hobby for people of all ages to share and suggested children should be coaxed into acquiring knowledge from a young age.
Making the comments at Gardeners World Live, the expert said the theme of sustainability should also be taught, with kids learning how to never take more than they give to the earth.
"It all becomes a very natural process for growing healthy food," Mr Turvill commented. "Thats whats so exciting about growing organic in schools."
He said those looking for a good place to start should try courgettes as they have a high yield and grow quickly.
The suggestions come after Dobbies revealed it had sold more than £1 million-worth of Grow Your Own products.
