RHS Greenhouse UK citizens are fighting the recession with gardening power, it has been asserted.

Recent figures show Brits are growing their own fruit and vegetables to save money during the financial downturn.

Sales of Dobbies Grow Your Own range increased by 82 per cent this weekend compared to the same period of 2008, according to the company.

Furthermore, B&Q recently reported over a quarter (26 per cent) of people in the UK are growing their own - producing an average saving of over £200 per year.

Homebase also announced it has doubled sales of herbs and vegetable plants over the past year.

"There are lots of reasons why people are becoming more favourable to growing their own," explained Grow Your Own magazine editor Lucy Halsall. "Saving money is definitely one of those."

She added environmental factors, as well as health benefits are other reasons people decide to grow food in their gardens and greenhouses.ADNFCR-1495-ID-19164555-ADNFCR
