Shed Collection UK gardeners are blessed with the weather and means to allow them to grow their own food fairly easily.

With spring approaching, gardeners across the country will be busy preparing their seedbeds and greenhouses for sowing and many will choose this year to try their hand at food-growing.

One of the most versatile and useful foods that can be grown in the UK is the lettuce - the healthy side dish that seems appropriate for the vast majority of meals.

However, gardeners should not expect lettuce-growing to be a cakewalk, according to GardenAction.

"Lettuce - often the beginner gardeners graveyard," the website says.

"Watch the gardening TV programmes, read the glossy gardening magazines - it all seems so easy! Sometimes it is, and sometimes it just isnt."

Lettuces should be sown into moist, warm, fine soil at a depth of around half an inch.

Each seedling should be space around 30cm from the next, with the same distance between rows.

Depending on the variety, some like sunlight while others prefer partial shade.

Lettuce can be combined with organically grown peppers and beetroots to make a healthy, tasty salad.ADNFCR-1495-ID-19069682-ADNFCR
