Cold Frames Collection Winter is giving way to spring and it will soon be time to get sowing vegetables like carrots.

The orange vegetables are a great source of calcium and vitamin A, and can take as little as ten weeks to grow from seed, according to gardenaction.co.uk.

While the website recommends the vegetable as a good first choice for the beginner, it also advises that soil conditions are essential to the crops success.

"Get the soil conditions correct and carrots are one of the easiest vegetables to grow in the cooler climates," it suggests.

"Incorrect soil conditions lead to misshapen carrots - these may well cause a chuckle when dug up, but they are not so well appreciated at cooking time!"

The soil should be improved with well-rotted organic material and should be dug and turned over until it is nice and light.

Earlier, tastier varieties should be grown in the sun, while the maincrop prefers a little shade during the summer.

Seeds should be sown thinly around half an inch deep into the soil with six inches of space between each row.ADNFCR-1495-ID-19067384-ADNFCR
