Historic greenhouse consigned to the history books

Glasshouses Following years of neglect, the historic greenhouse in Birminghams Cannon Hill Park has been dismantled.

The giant greenhouse - once home to rare and exotic plants - had reportedly become a heath and safety concern after standing as a park landmark for decades, the Birmingham Mail reported.

But locals are upset that the glazed structure has been torn down, with one regular park user telling the newspaper that it equates to "civic vandalism".

"Every time I come in through the front gate those greenhouses have been there to greet me," explained Anne Malloy, who has been coming to the park for 17 years.

"As far as I know there has been no consultation with the public and park users. They just switched the heating off and put a fence up. Its disgusting."

Greenhouse lovers in the area will have something to smile about after the local council announced that the tropical greenhouse would be replaced with a modern sub-tropical greenhouse.

Locals could also be happy that the park has survived since 1873- the government recently knocked back proposals to stop the practice of garden grabbing - where development encroaches on green spaces in urban areas.ADNFCR-1495-ID-18916153-ADNFCR
