RHS Greenhouse The children of North Yorkshire will have further inspiration to take into their parents greenhouses after it emerged a local garden project has been awarded £50,000 by the National Lottery.

The Helmsley Walled Garden won the prize as part of TV show Peoples Millions and intends to use the money to build a sensory garden and improve its existing learning facilities for children.

Helmsley beat off opposition from eight other national finalists and pipped Huslethwaite Parish Church to the post in a public vote, according to the Darlington and Stockton Times.

Garden manager Rebecca Williams told the newspaper that her project was already helping kids and would continue to do so as a result of the £50,000.

"As well as restoring and protecting this important historic garden for local people to enjoy, our work will also allow horticultural therapy for special needs students and people with disabilities to come from miles around," she said.

Around one million pounds has been poured into the project since it began restoration work five years ago and this latest investment is set to continue the good work already done.ADNFCR-1495-ID-18908524-ADNFCR
