Planthouses Although the summer has been a poor one, South Shields has been doing its best to brighten up the mood with its colourful coastline.

The town picked up a silver award from Britain in Bloom for its floral displays and community involvement, with Ocean Road gaining a special award based on the contributions of local businesses.

But in spite of picking up the awards, the town wont be resting on its laurels, according to councillor Michael Clare.

"We have a beautiful coastline and we are delighted it has been awarded in Britain in Bloom," he said.

"While we are overjoyed at being awarded silver in this years contest, our Streetscape team is determined to do even better next year and is aiming to bring home the gold."

Special mentions went to the local Boys Brigade, who planted a commemorative carpet bed and Britain in Bloom judge Roger Burnett praised the town for its efforts in spite of the poor weather.

"Despite the poor summer weather, the finalists proved beyond doubt just what can be achieved when communities work together," he saidADNFCR-1495-ID-18810056-ADNFCR
