Glasshouses The Alderley Edge Allotments and Gardens Society annual show has been hailed as a great success as a result of the huge increase in the number of exhibitors showing of the produce of their gardens and greenhouses.

Exhibitor levels were up 50 per cent on last years figures, meaning the show was full of fruit, vegetable and floral displays and food and handicraft offerings.

However, show secretary Ian Copeland is hopeful that the 2009 event will be even bigger than this years, the Wilmslow Express reports.

He said that it plays an important role in bringing the community together and as such has urged all those considering entering to "plant the seeds, watch them grow and leave the rest to mother nature".

Perhaps the highlight of the event was the unveiling of a giant three-foot cabbage, while another notable entrant, Chris Yearsley, took home awards for dahlias, sweet peas, cacti and five different kinds of vegetables, according to the newspaper.

Budding gardeners looking to grow prize-winning vegetables should consider using a greenhouse to get the best results.ADNFCR-1495-ID-18763034-ADNFCR
