Still time to grow your own produce
Horticulturalists who feel they have left it too late in the year to grow their own produce need not despair, according to sector commentator Elspeth Thompson.
Writing in the online pages of the Telegraph, she explains that a growing number of mail order firms now offer "ready to plant plots".
These consist of seedlings which are dispatched to consumers as they become ready to be incorporated into the garden.
Ms Thompson explains that while this method is more expensive than cultivating plants from seed, it still has the potential to be good value for money, especially if horticultural enthusiasts think carefully about the plants they wish to grow.
"Go for types of vegetable where you will get maximum return per seedling, for example cut-and-come-again lettuce leaves, peppers and tomatoes and purple-sprouting broccoli which keeps on cropping over a relatively long period," she suggests.
Meanwhile, the Soil Association recently asserted that gardeners are becoming increasingly aware of the notion of growing their own produce.
