March weather "variable"

Classic Greenhouses Weather in March is variable, with conditions varying on an almost daily basis in some cases, explains the Royal Horticultural Society.

The organisation explains that as spring advances, the rays from the sun grow strong and temperatures begin to rise, meaning that heaters in greenhouses and conservatories should be checked to make sure that they are working properly.

As such, a maximum-minimum thermometer could potentially be a wise investment.

Melting snow and heavy showers can result in nutrients being washed out of the soil and therefore it may be advisable to apply fertiliser to the garden during this period.

Due to potentially strong winds, it is also prudent to check that tree stakes are securely in the ground and that plants are tied to supports firmly.

Meanwhile, allotment expert Caroline Foley recently wrote in her Guardian blog that horticulturalists can sow carrot seeds under cloches once the soil temperature reaches seven degrees C.ADNFCR-1495-ID-18499837-ADNFCR
